Our City is rich with history from the Revolutionary War, Civil War and Industrial Era. Come experience our historic sites, unique museums and Victorian villas Danville is home to some of the finest Victorian and Edwardian architecture in Virginia and North Carolina. Many of the old mansions built by the tobacco and textile barons of the late 19th century still stand as testimony to the wealth and power of those industries and to the skill and craftsmanship long disappeared from modern building techniques. Settled in 1793 and incorporated in 1835, Danville boasts many historic areas. The Old West End Historic District is home to the elegant Millionaires Row and many fine Victorian homes and mansions. The Downtown Historic District houses notable structures from the turn of the century through the 1930s. The Tobacco Warehouse District is emerging as a premier area for new investment and development, housing major industry and cultural activities. The Neapolis Historic (eligible) District is home to many fine Victorian homes and is the original site of old North Danville. The Dan River Historic (eligible) District runs along both sides of the Dan River and boasts beautiful arch bridges, an old navigation canal, and the original textile factories from the 1880s. The Schoolfield Historic (eligible) Mill District houses quaint homes typical of the old Mill village and represents one of the most unique residential areas in Danville.
The Danville-Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial is located in Dan Daniel Memorial Park directly across from the American Legion Post 325 baseball stadium. The Crossing at the Dan is a culmination of various entertainment activities. This once bustling Southern Railroad rail yard has been transformed into educational, entertainment, and recreational facilities. The historic 1899 Passenger Rail Station is now home to the Danville Science Center and AMTRAK while the Southern Railroad Warehouse houses the Community Market. In addition, there is the Carrington Pavilion (an outdoor amphitheater), the Pepsi Building with its meeting room and facilities, the parking lot/festival area, and the Riverwalk bicycling and pedestrian trail. The Crossing is the home of numerous concerts, special events, rentals and more! |
